Debre Birhan is located 130 kilometer away from the capital through the way to the towns of Dessie, Kombolcha, Lalibela and Mekelle, the other gateway to the historic route. The founder of this place was Emperor Zara Yaqob (14th century) who was influenced by mysterious light that suddenly appeared in and around his camp, then he built a palace and a church on the sight of the “Great Light” (Debre Birhan in Amharic).
Reached on all weather roads, 42km off the main road from the town of Debre Birhan, Ankober was the seat of (in the 19th century) the Shoa kingdom during the reign of King Sahle Sillassie, Hailemalekot and the early years of Menelik II. Now the palace is situated on a commanding height with a spectacular view of the Rift Valley up to the Harar Mountains.
