Sof Omar Cave

sofoamrThe Sof Omar Cave System, situated not far from the Bale Mountains National Park, is one of the most spectacular and extensive underground system of caverns in the world, formed by Web River as it carved a channel through 15.4 km limestone foothills. This extraordinary natural phenomenon of breathtaking beauty and underground world with its arched portals, high eroded ceiling and deep vaulted chambers is now an important Islamic Shrine. The cave is named after Sheik Sof Omar, a 12th century Muslim leader, who used them as a refuge. As you entered the dry, cool cave, one can see and amazed how nature has worked a marvel of architecture, there are soaring pillars of stone twenty meters high, flying buttresses, fluted archways and airy vaults.
